Instant messaging service Users who misuse Whatsapp can now be prosecuted. Whatsapp has provided this through its FAQ post. Whatsapp says that users who send or forward messages to multiple people at the same time, users who send automated messages, can be prosecuted if they violate any terms and conditions.
Action to be taken from 7th December
Whatsapp said in the 'Unauthorized Usage of WhatsApp Policy' section of its FAQ page that any user or institution that sends bulk messages or sends automated messages simultaneously will face legal action from December 7. However, Whatsapp has not clarified what kind of legal action it will take on the user.
The incident of Whatsapp's misuse came to light during the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Users were found to be sending bulk messages on Whatsapp through the Free Clone app and software tools. Whatsapp has been the target of the central government since last year due to fake news and rumours. Since the Maharashtra incident last year, Whatsapp had appealed to users through advertising to prevent the spread of fake news and rumours.
Whatsapp has taken these steps so far
WhatsApp has made several changes to its app to prevent fake news and rumours from going viral rapidly. With the app's forwarding feature changed, users can now send a message to up to 5 people at a time. Even after this feature is added, some users are sending bulk messages by cloning apps and through software tools. WhatsApp has decided to take legal action against these users.
